Volkswagen Golf officially dies in the US

2021 Volkswagen Golf

End of road for the Gulf, friends.

Volkswagen

The Volkswagen Golf will no longer be sold in the US, the German brand said on Wednesday. After two years of indicating that the hatchback would leave these parts, VW has finally decided to give us a straight answer. However, this is not bad news. The eighth generation Golf GTI and Golf R will still come to America. It’s just that U.S. buyers have largely deviated from compact cars in recent years, and the standard Golf just hasn’t cut it on VW’s sales charts.

In fact, the much more expensive Golf GTI conveniently sold out the standard Golf in the seventh-generation hatchback era. Buyers who are still looking for a compact VW car should rather target the Jetta, or the upcoming Taos crossover. The small SUV should be much more pleasing to American buyers in a car market obsessed with utility vehicles.

After the introduction of the Golf in 1974, VW managed to sell 2.5 million of it locally. If you’re hoping to get one of the last ones, there’s still time. The brand said that while production of the American Specification Golf ended last week in Mexico, the final model year 2021 is available at dealers nationwide. If you find one, it comes in only a single variant, because the brand shows the door: the TSI finish. The Golf TSI features a 1.4-liter turbo four-engine mated to a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, and with 16-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery and standard heated seats. Smart keyless entry and a range of driver assistance features are also standard on the latest Golfs.

The prices of the latest of the Golfs start at $ 24,190, but the Golf TSI with an automatic cost costs a few hundred dollars more at $ 24,990. Both prices include a $ 995 rate. We will get our first taste of the new Golf already on sale in Europe when VW sends the first 2022 Golf GTI and R models to the US this autumn.
