Mount Semeru in Indonesia erupted and threw ash and smoke about 5.6 km into the air above Java, the country with the most populous country.

No evacuation orders have been issued so far and no casualties have been reported.

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has warned residents of the mountain’s slopes to be alert to ongoing volcanic activity.

Footage showed ash from the 3,676 m (12,060 ft) volcano over homes.

‘The villages of Sumber Mujur and Curah Koboan [in Lumajang municipality] is located in the orbit of the hot clouds, “said Thoriqul Haq, local official, on Saturday.

Residents of the Curah Kobokan River basin are urged to be on the lookout for possible ‘cold lava’ mudflow, which could be caused by intense rainfall combined with volcanic material.

Mount Semeru erupted around 17:24 local time (10:24 GMT), authorities said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, regularly causing volcanic activity as well as earthquakes.

Semeru – also known as “The Great Mountain” – is the highest volcano in Java and one of the most active. It is also one of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations.

The volcano erupted earlier in December when about 550 people were evacuated.

In the last week, Indonesia has endured several landslides, a deadly earthquake on the island of Sulawesi and the loss of a Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 with 62 people on board.
