Virginia transfer Justin McKoy joins UNC

Hubert Davis got his first recruit and it comes via the transfer portal. Virginia Transfer Justin McKoy announced its commitment to North Carolina on Saturday.

Davis offered McKoy a scholarship on Wednesday, a day after he was announced as the new head coach of UNC.

“He talked about how he sees me fit into the offense, and said he likes me as a player on the court and a person off the court,” McKoy told Inside Carolina. “He said I fit in with Carolina culture …”

The 6-foot-8, 215-pound native Cary, NC, has played two seasons in Virginia. As a sophomore, McKoy played in 19 games – four starts – averaging 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for a Cavs team that finished at the top of the ACC standings. He shot 48.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point range and 80 percent on free throws. His minutes increased late in the 2020-21 season. Over the last four games, he averaged 4.5 points (60 percent off the field) and 5.3 rebounds in 17 minutes per game.

McKoy, who is still eligible for three more years, is expected to play a hybrid forward role at UNC.

“I got a lot better offensively,” he told Inside Carolina. “My shot has become much more consistent. I can put it on the floor. The two most important things I would really improve are my lateral speed – I can watch multiple positions on the floor – and then my setback. ‘

With the status of the entire 2021-22 front field of UNC in motion – Day’Ron Sharpe and Armando Bacot (testing the waters) declare for the NBA draft, while Garrison Brooks, Walker Kessler, Walker Miller and Sterling Manley provide the transfer portal enter – McKoy will provide stability in the forecourt. Right now, he and sophomore Leaky Black are the longest-serving players in the Carolina Series.

McKoy announced plans to enter the transfer portal on March 30: “I would first like to thank the UVa staff, my teammates and the entire Charlottesville community for their continued support,” he wrote on social media. ‘Although I am entering the portal, the many things I have learned and acquired will help my navigation on and off the track. I with my teammates and these (UVa) staff are nothing but the best. ”

The Tar Heels, under Roy Williams, recruited and offered McKoy two years ago before signing with Virginia. McKoy was available that spring because he asked to be released from his intent in Penn State. Hy ascored 24.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists his senior season at Cary (NC) Panther Creek High School.

Hubert Davis inherited a roster that still has several scholarships available. He addressed the need for the team to recruit the outdoor portal during the off-season and outlined its recruitment vision during its introductory press conference earlier this week.

‘We need to get better with the transfer portal and bring in big players who have a vision to want to be a part of this program, to be a part of this history and to have a great time. here on the floor … ‘Davis said. “I want everyone to have the same experience I had in Carolina. My experience here was wonderful … the reason I had a wonderful experience in the midst of difficult days was because I knew it was the place where I wanted to be, the place where I wanted to be coached, the place where I wanted to be to get better, the place where I wanted to be to grow up, the place where I wanted to be the best person and be the best basketball player I can be. ”
