Virginia police officer shot while trying to catch an escaped cow

A police officer in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is in a stable condition after being accidentally shot during an attempt to stop a loose cow.

According to Harrisonburg police, officers responded to an animal complaint Saturday night after a cow escaped from a feather house earlier in the day. The cow was near a 7-Eleven shortly after the call.

After local farmers could not catch and restrain the cow, officers intervened to end the situation. One officer was hit by a bullet in the lower body and transferred to UVA Medical Center for a life-threatening injury.

The department is investigating whether the officer was shot by a fellow officer or by someone else who tried to stop the cow.

Due to injuries sustained during the attempt to strangle the animal, it was decided to kill the cow.
