Good morning Britain host Piers Morgan stormed the middle of the British morning show on Tuesday after one of his colleagues held him accountable for recent criticism of Meghan Markle.
First, some context: during Markle and Prince Harry’s well-watched interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday night, Markle spoke candidly about her negative experiences with the royal family and the British press. In a particularly sobering segment, she reveals that the intense public inquiry surrounding her suicidal thoughts, for which she could not get help at the time.
On Monday s Good morning Britain was broadcast, Morgan was furious about the interview, which he called “a two-hour trash can from our royal family, from the monarchy, from everything the queen has worked so hard for.”
Later in the episode, after the show played a track from Markle that succumbed to suicidal thoughts, Morgan said: ‘I do not believe a word she says, Meghan Markle. I would not believe it if she read me a weather report. (His co-presenter Susanna Reid replied: “This is a pretty pathetic response to someone who expressed the thoughts,” while the British charity Mind Condemns Morgan’s statement on Twitter.)
During Tuesday’s delivery of the ITV series, Army Chief Alex Beresford pushed Morgan further to the forefront for his previous comments – which they later described as ‘absolutely demonic behavior’, which led to Morgan retiring from the series.
“I understand you do not like Meghan Markle. You’ve made it so clear a few times about this program, “Beresford said.” And I understand that you have a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one, and she cut you off. She is entitled to cut you off if she wishes. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I do not think she has it, but still you continue to throw her in the trash. ‘
At that point, Morgan replied, “OK, I’m done with this,” and he left the stage, which Beresford encountered as a ‘pathetic’ reaction. But Morgan returned later in the program, and although he persisted in not believing ‘what Meghan Markle says in general in this interview’, he reiterated his position on mental health and suicide.
“It is clear that these are extremely serious things and that they need to be taken extremely seriously, and if someone feels that way, they should get the treatment every time and get the help they need,” he continued. ‘And if they belong to an institution like the royal family, they should seek help and get it. It’s not for me to ask if she had suicide. I’m not thinking about it, and she has to say it. ‘
