Valve’s Steam Data for December Highs Immersion for Linux Gaming Marketshare

KLEP -

Valve has just released their Steam Survey numbers for December 2020 and it’s a big disappointment for Linux gamers if the numbers are indeed accurate.

According to Valve’s published figures, the Linux market share on Steam represents only 0.57%, or a decrease of 0.33% compared to the previous month. The December 2020 figures show that Windows is up just over 1.6%, while MacOS is losing 1.31% market share to 2.14%. These numbers are a big upset for both Linux and MacOS games.

It is possible that these numbers are a bit off, as we have seen many times in the past where Valve later revised their numbers based on different explanations. But it is also possible that there was indeed a large increase in Windows gamers during the holidays and different sales of games, etc. There are also some who doubt Valve’s Steam Survey techniques, among others.

But anyway, previously at 0.9% and hoping to soon crack the 1.0% threshold for Steam Linux games, the numbers at this point are a disappointment to non-Windows gamers.

So, despite the Steam Survey results as published now, the game on Linux market share is back to 0.57% after seeing a steady increase since the launch of Steam Play (Proton) to many more games on Allow Linux.
