Valheim’s Dedicated Server Update Apparently Breaks Dedicated Servers

Valheim’s latest update contains a bunch of pretty mundane technical changes, but it adds up to an exciting thing for dedicated server users – less delay. This patch has made changes in the way connections work with dedicated servers, and although it would mean a better experience on those servers, many players now have connection problems.

“Today’s patch has major changes to dedicated servers,” the developers said in the announcement. Dedicated servers now always use direct connections instead of using Steam Datagram Relay (SDR). This should result in a much lower delay for most players. Private servers are enabled by adding ‘-public 0’ to the server rule. ”

The problem is that players now experience a ‘disconnected’ error when trying to connect to dedicated servers, and it’s not clear why. Some hosts have been successful by uninstalling and reinstalling the server software – or simply restarting – but not all. Others have succeeded by opening additional ports – but not all.

Players have reported the issue in Reddit threads, Steam forum topics, and the official Discord. The developers are probably aware of this – there is an open issue in the official troubleshooting – but for now there is no clear indication as to what is causing the issue or when it will be fixed.
