Valheim takes over steam and jerks over, despite early access

Iron Gate AB’s Viking survival game Valheim has taken over Steam and Twitch after launching in Early Access just last week. Valheim drops players into a procedurally generated world inspired by Norwegian mythology where they must craft, build, sail and fight to survive, with PvE co-op available for up to 10 players. It is currently only available on PC via Steam.

The game currently sits at the top of Steam’s top seller list (measured by total revenue, rather than sales), where it rose last week, beating games like Nioh 2 and Football Manager 2021. With an overwhelmingly positive rating Steam, it clearly goes down well with those who bought it as well, and the player statistics confirm its popularity just further. With more than 130,000 concurrent players, Valheim also quickly falls to the rankings of Steam players. At the time of writing, the game sits comfortably in the Top 10 games on Steam, just below Rust and Rainbow Six: Siege, and it currently has more players than some Steam stalwarts like Rocket League, Path of Exile, Civilization VI and Warframe.

About Twitch, the game also sees a lot of mainstream success with streamers, which appear in the top categories. Esports Charts lists about 31,000 average viewers since its release, peaking at 81,392 – you can probably expect it to grow with current momentum.

In other Steam news, this is what Valve’s Gabe Newell thinks brain-computer interfaces are going to do for gaming. Steam was recently fined by the EU for alleged ‘geo-blocking’.
