The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the default track car. Chances are you will see at least one at every opportunity you go to, simply because it does the job so well. Most people walk that route because it is easy and because the RS is so rewarding to ride on a closed track. But some people, like Phil Morrison from Driftworks in the UK, walk a slightly different path. One involving V-8 exchanges and fireballs.
Instead of simply buying a ready-made Porsche or BMW for HPDE duties, Morrison decided to build his own. He used an E30 M3 casing and swapped the 4.0-liter S65 V-8 and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission of an E3-generation M3, creating a lightweight Bavarian rocket on wheels. The classic formula of big V-8 plus small chassis equals mega performance, is clearly on the right track.
At a recent event in Donington Park, Morrison came across a 991-generation 911 GT3 RS – the one with a flat six of 520 horsepower and a rapidly changing PDK – and managed to keep up all the time. cars sending out all the others on the track.
There’s plenty of action as the two cars drive fast on Donington, with a seemingly endless stream of fireballs shutting down from the M3’s exhaust pipes every time. You will want the sound for this one.
