MADISON, Wis. – Health officials are preparing this winter for the possibility of a ‘twin pandemic’ with COVID-19 and flu. But new data from UW Health shows that there have been virtually no local flu cases this year.
As of Wednesday, February 10, UW Health data shows that there was only one case of flu. According to a news release, these numbers stand in contrast to a year ago, when UW Health saw more than 1,000 positive tests for flu by this time.
“The decline in flu numbers is encouraging because I think it would have been worse if we had a large number of COVID-19 cases that coincided with flu cases,” said Dr. Nasia Safdar, medical director of infection control at UW Health, said. “In view of this sharp decline in influenza cases, the public may consider wearing masks during the flu season in the future, regardless of the COVID-19 situation.”
