Utah Jazz Donovan Mitchell is expected to miss several games after MRI showed no structural damage, sources said

An MRI of Donovan Mitchell’s right ankle showed no structural damage, but the Utah Jazz guard is expected to miss several games before returning, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Mitchell sustained the injury during the third quarter of Friday’s 119-111 win over the Pacers, when he jumped to try to divert a long exhaust pass and came down uncomfortably with his foot under Indiana guard Edmond Sumner. Mitchell immediately grabbed pain from his lower leg and needed help getting to the locker room, with his teammate Royce O’Neale and a coach supporting him.

Sources told Wojnarowski on Friday that Mitchell had low ankle sprains and that X-rays were negative.

“Of course we hope it’s nothing serious,” coach Quin Snyder said after Friday’s game, “but they are doing everything in their power to judge it.”

Mitchell had an offensive tear last month, averaging 30.0 points per game in April, with outbursts not done in a Jazz uniform since Karl Malone. Mitchell has played four times and scored at least 35, with 40 in three of the four games.

The 24-year-old averaged an average career high of 26.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists for the Jazz in first place.

Information about ESPN’s Royce Young was used in this report.
