USCG, good Samaritans save 6, and look for more to capsize the elevator

The U.S. Coast Guard and several good Samaritan vessels rescued six people and are looking for more after a commercial elevator capsized eight miles south of Port Fourchon.

Coastguards received a radio beacon notification at 4:30 p.m. from a grieving 129-foot commercial elevator and issued an urgent broadcast on marine information to which, according to the USCG, several Samaritan boat crews are responding.

SEACOR Marine has confirmed to ABC News that the vessel is the SEACOR Power lift boat, which is used in the oil and gas investigation.

The crew of pre-ordered Coast Guard clipper Glenn Harris, a 154-foot rapid response cutter, arrived on the scene within 30 minutes and rescued one person from the vessel. A Coast Guard response boat Grand Isle rescued another person, and good Samaritan vessels at the scene rescued four others from the water, the Coast Guard reported.

Among the rescue teams responding, there is one coastguard (a second is underway); A Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter; two Coast Guard Grand Isle response boats; four good Samaritan vessels; and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi.

The U.S. Coast Guard station Grand Isle has posted photos of damage left behind by strong storms that swept through Louisiana on Tuesday.

Note: The Coast Guard’s initial Tweet initially reported that the vessel was 265 feet and off Grand Isle. They have since corrected that report; the true vessel length is 129 feet and it is south of Port Fourchon.
