US Postal Service Award Contract to Launch Billion-Billion-dollar Billion-dollar Delivery Vehicles

WASHINGTON, 23 February 2021 / PRNewswire / – The US Postal Service announced today that it has signed a ten-year contract Oshkosh, WI, based on Oshkosh Defense, to manufacture a new generation of US delivery vehicles that will drive the most dramatic modernization of the USPS fleet in three decades.

The historic investment is part of a plan that the Postal Service will soon announce to transform its financial performance and customer service over the next ten years through significant investments in people, technology and infrastructure, as it seeks to become the preferred delivery. service provider for the American public.

Under the initial contract $ 482 million Oshkosh Defense will finalize the production design of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV), a purpose-built, right-hand vehicle for mail and parcel delivery, and will assemble 50,000 to 165,000 of it over ten years. The vehicles will be equipped with fuel-efficient internal combustion engines or batteries with electric power stations and can be adapted to keep pace with advances in electric vehicle technologies. The initial investment includes tools for the construction and expansion of the US manufacturing facility where the final assembly of vehicles will take place.

The contract is the first part of a multi-billiondollar 10-Year attempt to replace the postal service delivery fleet, one of the largest in the world. The postal service fleet has more than 230,000 vehicles in each class, including purpose-built and commercial vehicles (COTS). About 190,000 deliver six, and often seven, days a week mail in every American community. The NGDV, along with other COTS vehicles, will replace and expand the current delivery fleet, which includes many vehicles that have been in service for 30 years.

The first NGDVs are estimated to appear on transport routes in 2023.

“As the U.S. institution that binds our country together, the U.S. Postal Service can have a bright and modern future if we make investments today that position us for excellence tomorrow,” the USPS postmaster general and CEO said. Louis DeJoy. “The NHI program is expanding our ability to handle more package volume and supporting our service providers with cleaner and more efficient technologies, more amenities and greater convenience and security as the American population delivers every day.”

The NGDV vehicles will include air conditioning and heating, improved ergonomics and some of the most advanced vehicle technologies – including 360-degree cameras, advanced brake and traction control, airbags, a front and rear-impact visual system that includes visuals, sound warning, and automatic braking. The vehicles also have a greater payload capacity to maximize efficiency and better accommodate higher package volumes due to the growth in e-commerce.

“Our fleet modernization also reflects the postal service’s commitment to a more environmentally sustainable mix of vehicles,” said DeJoy. “Because we operate one of the largest civilian government fleets in the world, we are committed to pursuing short-term and long-term opportunities to reduce our impact on the environment.”

The Postal Service awarded the Oshkosh Defense contract in accordance with competing Postal Service procurement policies after extensive testing of prototype vehicles, evaluation of offered production proposals and discussion of technical specifications with the providers.

The award is a contract for indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ), which means that after an initial dollar commitment, the Postal Service constantly has the ability to order more PGCE over a fixed period, in this case ten years. Oshkosh Defense evaluates which of their various US manufacturing locations is best suited to increase the production rate of the PGCE.
