US policy towards Russia is ‘dumb’, says Lavrov

Russia’s top diplomat on Thursday described US policy towards Moscow as ‘dumb’ and warned that his country would retaliate if Washington imposed new sanctions.

Asked about the prospect of new sanctions from Washington, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said all attempts to pressure Russia were likely to fail.

He described US policy on Russia as “deadlocked and even dumb”, stressing that US sanctions had failed to achieve its goals in the past.

“Such actions have taught us one thing: we must rely on ourselves because the US and its allies are not reliable partners,” Lavrov said during a visit to Kazakhstan, adding that “we will naturally respond to any unfriendly steps.”

Last month, Russia recalled its ambassador from Washington after US President Joe Biden was asked in an interview whether Russian President Vladimir Putin was a “killer” and replied, “I do.”

In a difficult stance on Russia, Biden said the days of the US ‘rolling over’ to Putin were over – in contrast to the approach of former President Donald Trump, who regularly spoke with approval of the Russian leader. The Biden government has warned that Russia will soon face sanctions over its attempt to influence the 2020 presidential election to help Trump’s re-election offer, and over the massive SolarWinds heels.

Recently, relations deteriorated further over the imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny after his poisoning – which he blames on the Kremlin. Russian authorities have denied the allegations.
