The country reached its bleak milestone on Thursday night, with data from Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirvus Resource Center showing that approximately 456,461 lives have been lost since Friday morning. Daily deaths remain high at more than 3,000 a day, according to estimates.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the US is the global leader in both deaths and cases, with nearly 27 million cases so far.
The biggest cause of the U.S. death toll in the past month was California, which has averaged more than 500 deaths a day in recent weeks.

Alabama is another important place, with the seven-day average deaths rising over the past two weeks, from 74 to 147 deaths per day. Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee have also seen recent increases in deaths.
Infectious disease specialists expect deaths to start declining soon after new cases peaked right around the beginning of the year.
