US and allies to announce coordinated sanctions against China over Uyghur ‘genocide’

According to two people familiar with the matter, the United States, Canada, Britain and the European Union will on Monday announce a series of sanctions against China over what US officials called a genocide campaign against Uyghur Muslims.

The coordinated campaign provides a trans-Atlantic display of unity against the communist government in Beijing, whose global ambitions and international oppression are of increasing concern in Europe and North America. It is also an opportunity for the Biden government to illustrate why it is so important to emphasize the importance of alliances.

The announcements come after a tense high-level meeting between U.S. and Chinese officials in Alaska. This is likely to deepen divisions between the United States and China, as well as China and the other countries involved, and Beijing is likely to retaliate in a similar way.
