Urban Meyer’s preference between Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields is clear

Since Urban Meyer apparently wants to step down to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to several reports, there is little doubt about who the former head coach of Florida and Ohio will want as his fullback.

One of the reasons the profession in Jacksonville appeals to Meyer is the fact that they have the overall choice in the 2021 NFL draft, which means he will almost certainly have the chance to coach Clemson fullback Trevor Lawrence.

Meyer did not hide his admiration for Lawrence, who is a prospect that Jets fans were upset when they won their first game of the year against the Rams, which cost them the best choice.

Like ESPNs Jeremy Fowler tweeted Wednesday, “Meyer has long been in love with Trevor Lawrence.”

Before the playoffs of college football last year, Meyer named Lawrence ‘the best quarterback in college football ever’.

And this season, while still working as a FOX Sports College analyst, Meyer put Lawrence in front of Ohio quarterback Justin Fields.

“I had Fields and Trevor right next to each other,” Meyer said. ‘I introduced Trevor Lawrence for one reason, he played another year. That was it. The one thing I would say about Justin Fields, because I’m very close to the situation, there is now no concern about him as a throwing quarterback. He is developed, he is outstanding. I hear the guys talking. I’m talking to Coach [Ryan] Day, and of course the quarterback coach I’m very close to. Comparisons with [former Ohio State QB] Dwayne Haskins is now everywhere as far as throwing football, which – it’s an elite pitcher. ‘

The mere mention of Haskins is dropping red flags after being named the overall no. 15 have chosen. He spent less than two years in Washington, which cut him in late December.

Lawrence, meanwhile, finished second in the Heisman Trophy poll in his final season at Clemson, which was briefly interrupted by a COVID-19 diagnosis. He played ten games and ended his season with a loss to Fields’ Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl, when Fields actually fared better than Lawrence.

Now Meyer may be in a position to choose between the two.
