[UPDATED 1/8] Twitch removes PogChamp emote, replaces it every day with a different emote

UPDATE 1/8: Following a proposal from Sean “Day[9]”Plot, Twitch will replace the PogChamp emote with a new emote every day.

Original story:

On the night of Wednesday, January 6, Twitch updated their website and removed the popular emote, PogChamp, after a series of messages from the face of the emote, Ryan “gootecks” Gutierrez. gootecks originally made headlines in 2010 in part of a YouTube series featuring co-fighting game community personality Mike Ross of Counter Cross TV, and the name comes from a later video featuring the same two hosts.

Despite its popularity on the site, Twitch released the following statement along with the removal of the emote.

In their statement, Twitch refers to a series of tweets made by gootecks around the events that took place on January 6 at the Capitol building in the United States. A large group of rioters stormed the campus in protest, breaking into the Capitol and invading the building. Congress today would confirm the votes of the Electoral College for President Biden. One woman was shot in the neck and died, after which gootecks are referred to in public.

Gootecks first tweeted that he would later share a graphic video of her death, while at the same time inciting violence and noting censorship by Twitter. He then tweeted a recording of the woman who was shot and again censored. He claims the riot “gave her life for our country”, and in both tweets he used the hashtag #MAGAMartyr.

Along with the raid on the Capitol building, several explosives were also found on campus.

The popular political streamer HasanAbi streamed through the events all day while it took place live. He was also alive with the removal of PogChamp, and showed frustration because the emote ‘overcame the person himself’, but admitted that he had gone ‘alt-right’.

Twitch acknowledged the importance of the hype emote and said it would work with the community to make a replacement.

gootecks did not publicly respond to Twitch’s removal of the emote.
