UP: 3 elderly women get a chance at rabies instead of Covid vaccine, pharmacist suspended

Three officials on Thursday administered a vaccine against rabies instead of a Covid-19 shot at a health center in Shamli district, officials said on Friday.

A pharmacist in charge of the outpatient department (OPD) of the Kandla Community Health Center, where the rabies shots are being given, was suspended on Friday while another pharmacist was fired, officials said. The medical supervisor of the facility received a warning.

District Magistrate (DM) Jasjit Kaur said: An investigation has been ordered into the incident. According to the report, the three women went to the health center to get the Covid shot. But instead of going to the Covid Vaccination Center on the first floor, they reached the general OPD. The pharmacist on duty left essential work and his job of administering the vaccine against rabies was assigned to a private person, who is a pharmacist of the Jan Aushadhi Kendra. The person injected the three women with the rabies vaccination without checking papers. ”

She added: ‘Based on the investigation report, the CMO [Chief Medical Officer] was instructed to suspend the pharmacist and the hospital’s medical supervisor was warned. The employment of the Jan Aushadhi Kendra employee has been terminated. ”

CMO Dr Sanjay Agarwal said: ‘The anti-rabies shot is given every Monday and Thursday at the OPD. The Covid vaccination process is offered in a separate location on the first floor of the health center. The women went to the OPD and asked for the vaccine. ”

The three women were identified as Saroj (70), Anarkali (72) and Satyavati (62). Anarkali told reporters: ‘I went to get the corona vaccine and they injected the dog vaccine. I felt dizzy and had a headache. When I asked if I should submit my Aadhaar card, they said it was not necessary. Then they said it was a vaccine for a dog bite. ”

According to the indictment submitted to CMO Agarwal, Saroj also complained of nausea and was taken to a private doctor. “The doctor checked their medical slip where it was mentioned that she had received a vaccine against rabies,” the letter reads.
