United Center vaccine appointments open Thursday, more than 100,000 sites for COVID shots available

CHICAGO (WLS) – With the mass vaccination site outside the United Center opening a week from Wednesday, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said people can start applying for appointments this Thursday.

A total of 110,000 appointments will be made available and the first appointments will open on Thursday at 08:30 for seniors.

“This is a call to seniors, their family members or anyone else in the senior network and support system to have them sign up for these appointments before they are taken,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

To register for an appointment, visit www.zocdoc.com/vaccine or call the multilingual hotline (312) 746-4835 from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 4pm on Sunday.

“I’m really hopeful that there’s an allocation for slots available over the phone,” said Courtney Hedderman, AARP Illinois Associate State Director. “It will make a big difference for people.”

After the registration period for the elderly, anyone who is eligible for a vaccine as part of the Phase 1B + group can start appointments on Sunday 7 March at 16:00.

The United Center will open for a limited number of appointments on March 9 before fully opening on March 10. The website will be open seven days a week from 08:00 to 20:00.

Officials said only initial vaccinations would be offered first, but there are plans to add a drive-through component. The city works with lawmakers and community groups to get people to sign and make appointments.

‘One of the reasons we wanted to keep the appointment open until Sunday was that the presentation, if the appointments are not all filled, really reminds us of the weekend’s time in which religious groups meet and encourages them to think about ways too. to help sign up their seniors, “said Dr. Allison Arwady.

On Friday, 222 U.S. Army soldiers will arrive in Chicago to prepare for their mission to administer up to 6,000 doses a day. The UC will administer the Pfizer vaccine, so recipients must return three weeks later for a second dose.

The city said the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be used this month to vaccinate airports and other transportation workers, as well as those who are in the factory and people who are home-bound.

“Our goal is to vaccinate individuals with the highest risk in terms of hospitalizations and deaths, and to vaccinate these institutions with the highest risk,” said Dr. Arwady said.

Currently, there are another half a million elderly people in Cook County who have not been vaccinated.

“To really get us over this terrible pandemic, we need to get our seniors vaccinated as quickly and as humanly as possible, no shortcuts there,” said Mayor Lightfoot.

The mayor encourages those who are technically proficient and have access to computers to sign up online and leave the phones for those who need to call for appointments.

Lawyer Aurora Health confirmed he was working with the city on a possible mass vaccination center near Wrigley Field, but declined to share specific details.

While the federal government manages the United Center’s mass vaccination site, this site will be managed by Advocate.

DECLARATION OF SUITABLE AURORA HEALTH:
As a community health leader, we are very committed to doing everything in our power to carry out the vaccination as quickly, fairly and safely as possible.
We are proud to partner with a potential mass vaccination site at Wrigley Field, which may be authorized by the City of Chicago. If the premises are designated and City vaccine supplies become available, Advocate Aurora Health will provide clinical staff and technical infrastructure.
This place is considered because it is an easy option for people who do not own cars as it is easily accessible via the CTA. It is part of our ongoing focus on partnership to ensure that residents of communities affected by disproportion have access to the vaccine as supplies become available.
We continue to believe that the vaccine is our best chance to put an end to this pandemic, and we continue to use our current, very limited stock for our most vulnerable patients over the age of 65.
