United Auto Workers strike at Volvo plant in Dublin

DUBLIN, Va. (WDBJ) – Union workers strike at Volvo’s truck plant in Dublin.

The plant’s vice president and general manager, Franky Marchand, said he was “surprised and disappointed” that United Auto Workers had decided to go on strike.

It is about contract negotiations between the workers and the truck manufacturer.

Last month, both parties agreed to a 30-day extension of their existing contract.

Regarding a new contract negotiation, Marchand said in a statement: “Progress is being made, and we have significantly increased the employees’ remuneration.”

‘We are committed to the collective bargaining process and look forward to coming to the table again. We are confident that we can reach an agreement that offers a competitive wage and benefit package for our employees and families, and can ensure the competitiveness, long-term growth and sustainability of the plant, ”he said.

Volvo’s New River Valley location employs more than 3,300 people, of which approximately 2,900 are UAW members.

The factory has added 1,100 jobs since the current union agreement was implemented in 2016, and according to the company is on track to have a net increase of about 600 jobs by 2021.
