Union in Amazon attempt refuses call to end boycott on social media

A spokesman on Sunday said the calls for a boycott in support of Amazon workers holding a union vote in Alabama did not support it.

“RWDSU has nothing to do with this,” said Chelsea Connor, director of communications for the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, “and we did not ask for it either.”

The boycott call being shared is a poster-style picture with the face of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. It calls for a boycott from March 7 to 13 “in solidarity with union workers.” Slogans include ‘one week no Prime’, ‘no shopping’, ‘Do not watch Prime TV’ and ‘Do not cross the picket line.’

The call appears to have been launched on March 3 by a blog related to the UCOMM Media Group. The blog post that lifted the call demanded no direct relationship with parties involved in the Bessemer vote.

If the vote were successful, it would be the first time Amazon workers had formed a union in a U.S. warehouse. With high interest, the mood aroused intense interest both inside and outside the company.

Over the past few days, a delegation of five members of the Democratic Congress has visited the facility in support of the union effort, and Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has criticized evidence of support from President Joe Biden.

Ballot papers in the current vote will be counted on 30 March.
