Uncertain future for Elon Musk-inspired DC-to-Baltimore tunnel

Things seem uncertain for the Boring Company’s underground electric path between DC and Baltimore, which was originally considered a tunnel between New York and the borough.

The Loop tunnel projects are also known as ‘Teslas in tunnels’.

There’s a newly completed Loop in Las Vegas that connects parts of the convention center there.

Another Loop project aimed at connecting frequently visited parts of the city, including the Strip, downtown Las Vegas, Allegiant Stadium, and McCarran Airport. The ultimate goal is to build a tunnel connecting Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

But in the DC region, plans seem to have stalled.

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company announced the Baltimore DC Loop four years ago.

But it has not broken ground and seems trapped in what Bloomberg News calls “no man’s land.”

Some progress has been made – including the business that buys land in DC that could be used as a station.

There was an environmental assessment of the Loop project; the U.S. Department of Transportation and Maryland unveiled the concept in 2019.

However, it seems that the project got stuck. Mention of it and another for Los Angeles is no longer on the Boring Company website.

Bloomberg News reports that it could be a sign that Musk is withdrawing from the Baltimore to DC Loop project, as well as another in Los Angeles that would connect baseball fans to Dodger Stadium.
