UK’s Matt Hancock says ‘Contagion’ helped inform him of the rollout of COVID-19

British Health Minister Matt Hancock said in an interview on Wednesday that the 2011 film “Contagion” had an impact on how he could best roll out the COVID-19 vaccine in the UK.

Hancock was a guest on the British LBC and talked about his decision to order enough vaccines to vaccinate every adult in the country. He pointed to the film and said he remembers that some of the biggest challenges the characters faced came when they considered accusing first.

He said he had cleared up the concern by insisting that the country ‘should give enough for every adult to get their two doses’.

“But also, we asked for the clinical advice on prioritization very early on and set it out in public so that there was no big queue over the order of priority,” he said.

The Independent newspaper first reported on the interview.

Vaccine supply is a sensitive issue in the European Union, which is unhappy that AstraZeneca is cutting back on the number of doses it plans to supply to the EU in the short term.

The company said last month that it plans to reduce initial deliveries within the EU from 80 million doses to 31 million doses due to the reduced yields of its manufacturing plants in Europe.

Hancock explained that he would not say that the Steven Soderbergh movie was his ‘primary source of advice on this’.
