We never doubted Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Wrath would be successful. 3D World recently awarded the 10/10 stars, and was the last Switch port we waited for during the Super Mario 35th anniversary celebration. So far, it performs significantly better than the Wii U edition, which sold 190% more box copies at launch in the UK and dethroned Animal Crossing: New Horizons from the top spot.
Since the Switch currently has an 80 million user base, compared to Wii U’s meager 6 million when 3D World was launched in 2013, this is hardly surprising. Releasing on the same day as the PS4 in Europe probably did not help either. Super Mario 3D World, which eventually sold 5.86 million copies in its lifetime, was the Wii U’s second best-selling game, just beaten by Mario Kart 8. A good result for a Wii U title, but on its best an average one for a major Super Mario entry.
3D World + Bowser’s Fury is also the third biggest Super Mario launch on Switch to date. This launch surpasses its 3D companions – Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D All-Stars – but came before 2D entries Super Mario Maker 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
Elsewhere in the graph, FIFA 21 has risen from 8th to 3rd place, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has fallen from 2nd to 5th. Little Nightmares II is the only other new entry in the chart, sliding to 7th place, while Ring Fit Adventure dropped from 4th to 10th position.
