Uber cuts 15 percent of staff

The dismissal comes as Uber merges its Eats platform with Postmates. While there will still be a clear Postmates app, it will increasingly be used on Uber Eats technology. It’s just not necessary to have so many team members supporting Postmates, as sorry as the human toll would be.

There is also the simple issue of survival in the current climate. Uber had already cut costs before the pandemic, and the virus only made the situation worse as demand for the shares fell. The company recently sold its self-driving cars and flying taxis division in an effort to cut unnecessary expenses. Add consolidation among competitors, such as Just Eat’s acquisition of Grubhub, and Uber is under particular pressure to reduce its spending where possible.
