U.S. Surgeon General: ‘No reason to doubt’ Covid-19’s death toll after Trump claims deaths are ‘exaggerated’

“From a public health perspective, I have no reason to doubt the numbers,” Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper on ‘State of the Union’ when asked about Trump’s allegation.

“And I think people should be very aware that it’s not just about the deaths like we talked about earlier,” he added. “It’s about hospitalizations, the capacity. These cases have an impact in different ways and people need to understand that there is a finish line in sight, but we need to keep running.”

Earlier Sunday, Trump claimed it Twitter that the number of cases and deaths of the “China Virus is very exaggerated” due to the CDC’s “ridiculous method of detection” compared to other countries, which reports “deliberate, very inaccurate and low”.

“If in doubt, call it Covid,” Trump wrote in a tweet.

The president previously tweeted conspiracy theories on social media again, saying that only a small percentage of the people who allegedly died from coronavirus actually died from the virus.

CNN reported in September that the CDC had to double down on rumors that coronavirus deaths were highly exaggerated, and the agency’s top expert on deaths said people misinterpreted the standard language for death certificates.

“In 94% of deaths with COVID-19, conditions other than COVID-19 are listed. These causes can include chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension,” said Bob Anderson, head of deaths at the CDC, in a statement at the time.

“In 6% of the death certificates containing Covid-19, only one cause or condition is listed,” the statement added. “The underlying cause of death is the condition that started with the series of events that eventually led to the person’s death. In 92% of all deaths mentioned by Covid-19, Covid-19 is listed as the underlying cause of death. ”
