Two women died after the car they were in dipped over a cliff and fell nearly 100 meters into Bodega Bay’s coastal waters, authorities said Sunday.

Firefighters arrived at the western parking lot of the Bodega Bay Head Trail at 11:05 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports that a vehicle with two women was driving through the handrail, Capt said. Justin Fox, of the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District, said.

Firefighters found the vehicle ended up on its roof in the tidal pools at the edge of the water, Fox said.

“We had to use ropes to get there,” Fox said. “After we were able to access the vehicle, we determined that they were dead.”

The two women were not identified.

Firefighters called a towing company to get the car out of the water so they could pull the women out, Fox said.

Dozens of people saw the crash and said, “It was a very busy day in the parking lot there.”

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
