Two men arrested after Florida-Georgia hunt, critically injured deputy

The GBI said preliminary information indicated that the deputy was shot during a chase that began in Seminole County, Florida, when a deputy wanted to impose a reckless driving stop on two men driving in a white pickup truck .

The men refused to stop and fired a weapon at officers who chased them, who fired back, the GBI said in a news release. The chase continued to Georgia, where Decatur County delegates joined the pursuit.

The suspects drove into the driveway of a house and ‘tried to shoot access through the door’, but left after the homeowner caught fire again.

One of the suspects then shot a deputy in Decatur County who arrived at the scene, the GBI said. The deputy was taken to a local hospital for surgery and is in critical condition.

The suspects fled with their truck, which destroyed them a short while later in a wooded area, the release said. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter and crew joined the hunt after the wreckage.

One of the suspects, identified as Brad Phillips, 41, was arrested without further incident, the GBI said in the release. He is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The GBI identified the second suspect as Troy Arthur Phillips. He was arrested and is in police custody.
