Twitter confirms ‘major overhaul’ coming to TweetDeck

TweetDeck is an alternative Twitter platform owned by the social network that offers a number of different features such as access to multiple timelines in columns and the planning of tweets. After ten years without any significant updates, Twitter has confirmed that it is finally working on a “major overhaul” of TweetDeck.

The update was confirmed by Twitter chief product officer Kayvon Beykpour in an interview with The edge Published Tuesday. According to Beykpour, Twitter acknowledges that TweetDeck has not received ‘much love’ recently, but it is about to change.

As the company has been working on new ways to improve the social network for advanced users, TweetDeck will get a redesign soon. Twitter’s chief product officer did not give details on exactly what changes the team is working on for TweetDeck, but Beykpour suggested that the platform be rebuilt “from the ground up”.

And we recently did not give much love to TweetDeck. It is about to change; we were working on a fairly large renovation of TweetDeck at the beginning, and that’s something we want to share in public somewhere this year. And so this is just an example of a service owned by Twitter and in which we will continue to invest.

No specific date has been set for the release of the new TweetDeck, other than as a confirmation that it is coming ‘somewhere this year’. TweetDeck was launched in 2008 and was also one of the most popular third-party Twitter clients available for various platforms, including iOS and macOS. The platform was acquired by Twitter in 2011 and is now only available as a web a MacOS application.

A Bloomberg report last month revealed that Twitter is considering adopting a subscription model for TweetDeck in the future. At the moment, the app is free and available to everyone.
