Twitter blocks some accounts in India again following government demands

NEW DELHI – Twitter Inc. said it was re-implementing restrictions on some accounts in India after the government threatened legal action when the company refused hundreds of handles inciting New Delhi.

Twitter blocked the handles last week at the request of the government, but then reversed its decision. After an investigation, the company said the accounts should be allowed.

The Indian government has threatened legal action, which could result in a fine or imprisonment for Twitter executives responsible for implementing government regulations.

On Wednesday, Twitter said it would block most accounts again. It says on his blog that the handles would only be blocked within India and would not include the accounts of journalists, media entities, activists and politicians.

“To do so, we believe, would violate their fundamental right to free expression under Indian law,” the blog post said.
