Update: [01/08/21] Twitter has now permanently eliminated Donald Trump’s account on the social media platform. After further backlash from Trump’s social media messages during the week during and after the violence at the US Capitol building, which led to 6 deaths, Twitter joins Twitch and Facebook to name the current president and former reality TV star deployed in the last days of his presidency.
If you try to visit his page, you will see a blank page with Account Suspended. Along with the ban, Twitter released a statement on its platform that read: ‘After carefully reviewing recent tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context surrounding them – specifically how they are received and interpreted on and off Twitter – we the bill because of the risk of further incitement to violence. ‘
Original post: After a riot at the U.S. Capitol building, Twitch followed the lead of other notable social media ventures and rendered Trump’s account inappropriate. A statement from Twitch cited the president’s ‘offensive rhetoric’ as the cause.
“In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have eliminated President Trump’s Twitch channel,” the statement said. “Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the incitement of the president, we believe it is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.”
Twitch is the latest in a series of technological ventures that have taken action against President Trump’s bills following riots he helps incite. Twitter temporarily suspended his account for 12 hours, while Facebook banned him from both the social media platform and Snapchat for at least the next two weeks “until the peaceful transition of power is complete.” Shopify has also removed Trump brands.
The chaos that erupted at the Capitol took place after several weeks in which President Trump promoted false allegations of voter fraud, and shortly thereafter he delivered a speech to a compounded crowd of protesters urging them to march to the Capitol while the congressional vote counts. Several lawmakers have suggested that the president’s rhetoric, which is often shared on social media platforms, contributed to the violence.
It is unclear how long the ban on Twitch will last. Last summer, Twitch banned Trump for ‘hateful behavior’ and lifted the suspension after two weeks.
