Turntable.fm is back, and so it works

The beloved social media music website Turntable.fm is making a surprising comeback almost eight years after it closed in 2013. two new versions: The original Turnover.fm, recently resurrected by founder Billy Chasen, and the mobile-focused Draaitafel.org, created by several Turntable.fm alums.

Although both services allow users to create personal avatars and host or join online listening parties, they differ in business models, features and availability.

Turnover.fm

Turntable.fm retains the site’s original experience. It’s free to use, and you can create playlists from music available on YouTube. (SoundCloud, once the integration is active.) But there is one critical catch. Turntable.fm is now available, but only for those who know the password.

You can request the password by entering your email address and your favorite song. If the song is ‘OK’, you will receive the password by email. We have no idea what Turntable.fm considers a ‘good’ song; otherwise we offer suggestions to give you a chance to get in.

I have not yet heard of my application. (Hopefully who likes handing out codes Drag’s “Dopesmoker.”)

Draaitafel.org

Unlike the free Turntable.fm, Turntable.org requires a subscription to use. Although you are not yet able to sign up for the service, there are also special rewards packages on sale that will offer you unique items and discounts on your subscription when Turntable.org starts live. The money goes to the development costs.

The other big difference from Turntable.org is that users can upload and play their own MP3s – this will not be limited to music offered on other sites. This will help independent artists to host listening parties of their own music.

Join the beta

A beta from Turntable.org will be launched in April. Interested parties can join the waiting list on the official website. There is also a special application form for artists who want to host digital programs through Turntable.org.
