Turns out Zelda: Breath Of The Wild’s NPCs share a common connection with the humble Mii

Switch launch title Zelda: Breath of the Wild continue to throw up cool secrets even today, and Twitter users @HEYimHeroic has just dug up another: the NPCs in the game use an updated version of the Mii face-making tool that first appeared when the Wii was released in 2006.

It makes sense that Nintendo would use an existing tool to streamline the process of creating characters for the game, but it’s quite surprising that a system created 15 years ago is still used in Nintendo’s AAA software. .

This is also interesting because it means that hackers who pull the game apart on a computer (via emulation) can ‘inject’ new faces into the game, as they understand how the faces are created. Expect to see some familiar faces arriving soon in modified versions of Breath of the Wild.
