The newspapers are expected to award the President the Medal of Freedom to the Republican in California on Monday, citing officials familiar with the plans. Nunes was a staunch ally and defender of Trump throughout his presidency.

The Washington Post was the first to report that Nunes and Jordan are expected to receive the medals in the final days of Trump’s presidency.
The award is intended to recognize ‘exceptional contributions’ to national security, world peace or cultural and other ‘significant’ efforts. Previous presidents have given the medal of freedom to members of Congress, but usually at the end of their careers in public service or for something unrelated to their congressional service, the Times noted.
Both Nunes and Jordan defended Trump during the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and during the investigation into the House’s accusation in 2019 – it appears Trump is being described as a ‘witch hunt’.

The White House did not respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the reports. An official schedule announced by the White House for Monday did not include a prize-giving ceremony for Nunes, although it could be added later.
Trump pushed the idea of giving Nunes the Medal of Freedom during an interview in October 2018 on ‘Fox & Friends’ when he served as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Initially, Trump suggested that the representative be given the medal of honor, which is given only for military acts, before correcting himself, saying Nunes deserves the Medal of Freedom.
“What he went through, and his bravery, he needs to get a very important medal,” Trump said.
