Trump strengthens Julia Letlow in the Louisiana House race to succeed her late husband

Former President Trump has urged his supporters to support Julia Letlow in the special election race in Louisana on Saturday to succeed her late husband, Luke, who died after contracting a coronavirus.

“Julia Letlow is excellent and so needed to help save our second amendment, at the border, and for our military and veterinarians,” Trump wrote in a statement released Saturday. “Louisiana, go out and vote today – she will never disappoint! Julia has my full and complete endorsement.”

Trump endorsed Letlow earlier on March 10 and is trying to boost her rise on Saturday with a new statement of support.

The special election to fill the rest of Republican Luke Letlow’s term is underway in the 5th Congress District. A total of 12 candidates are in the race on Saturday.

Luke Letlow died suddenly on December 29, 2020, at the age of 41 from coronavirus complications. He was to be sworn in on January 3 to represent the 5th Congress District. He left behind his wife and two young children.

Julia Letlow, a career in higher education, launched her congressional offer in January with a promise to ‘continue the mission that Luke began – to stand up for our Christian values, to fight for our rural agricultural communities and to deliver real results to tell us ahead, ‘Letlow, R-La., said at the time.

Letlow raised her voice earlier Saturday with her children by her side.

Voters in Louisana also decide who will succeed Democratic Representative Cedric Richmond in the Second Congressional District. Richmond resigned to join the Biden administration.

In both of Saturday’s races, the candidate will win more than 50% of the vote. If no one exceeds the threshold for a majority, the two leading candidates will stand in a run-off election on April 24.

Letlow is not the only widow of the coronavirus who wants to run for her husband’s seat.

In the 6th Congressional District of Texas, Susan Wright is running in the May 1 election for her late husband, Rep. Ron Wright, to replace. The Republican died on February 7 after contracting coronavirus at age 67.
