Former President Donald Trump said during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday that women’s sports would “die” if trans athletes were allowed to participate.
“Joe Biden and the Democrats are even campaigning for policies that would destroy women’s sports,” Trump said, apparently referring to the Equality Act, which seeks to extend the protection of the LGBTQ community and was passed in the House last week.
“A lot of women’s sports break a lot of new records – hate to say ladies – but they have a lot of new records that are being smashed.”
Referring to weightlifting, Trump said “every grain is like a big deal for years” as he pretended to lift an invisible bar. “Suddenly someone comes in who hits it with a hundred pounds,” he said.
Trump continues: “Young girls and women are incensed that they are now forced to compete against those who are biological men. It is not good for women. It is not good for women’s sports that have worked so long and so hard to come where they were not. ‘
“For example, what coach would want to recruit a young woman to compete if her record could easily be born by someone born as a man?” Asked Trump.
He added: “If it does not change, women’s sports as we know it will die.”
Trump spoke during the last day of the Conservative conference in Orlando, Florida, in his first public speech since leaving the White House last month.
Many U.S. states are currently considering legislation that would restrict the participation of transgender youth in sports.
Such bills, however, could run counter to an executive order signed by President Joe Biden on his first day in office, reversing Trump’s definition of gender as the person he was assigned at birth.
