Trump is expected to issue forgiveness as president on the last day while the Senate would meet again

President Trump plans to spend his last full day in office Tuesday with the issuance of 100 pardons or commutations, a senior administration official and a senior White House official told CBS News. Meanwhile, the Senate will meet again that day for the first time since the House of Representatives. Trump was indicted last week, and is starting confirmation hearings for some of the presidential nominees, Joe Biden.

It is not yet known who Mr. Trump plans to pardon, though one source said the president is not expected to forgive himself.

Mr. Trump remained out of the public eye on Monday, while First Lady Melania Trump released a farewell video. She did not directly refer to the assault on the Capitol on January 6, but she said: “Be passionate in everything you do, but always remember that violence is never the answer and will never be justified.”

Contrary to tradition, Melania Trump did not give a tour to incoming first lady Jill Biden. The Trumps will be the first president and first lady to skip the president’s inauguration in more than 150 years.

While the military is focused on protecting the inauguration, Mr. Trump did not get the great military honors he wanted for his dispatch. Instead, he will receive an abbreviated return at 08:00 on Wednesday before going to Mar-a-Lago.

The Pentagon has authorized more than 25,000 National Guard troops to secure the inauguration, and the FBI is notifying all Guard members. National Guard bureau chief Daniel Hokanson told CBS News’ David Martin that he was “absolutely not” concerned about the reliability of his troops.

The FBI is also investigating the financing of the Capitol assault. Ninety people are facing federal charges, and the number is expected to rise as the FBI catches up on the information sent in tips.

Charges have also been filed against a person allegedly linked to the Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government group, as well as the militia group Three Percenters.

On Tuesday, the Senate will hold confirmation hearings for five key cabinet members: Janet Yellen at Treasury, Antony Blinken at State, Lloyd Austin at Defense, Alejandro Mayorkas at Homeland Security and Avril Haines as Director of National Intelligence.
