Former President Donald Trump singled out Mitch McConnell’s ally as a ‘political smile’ and vowed to support the primary challengers who support his agenda while seeking to retain influence over the Republican Party.
‘Mitch is a daring, grumpy and impeccable political heel, and if Republican Senators stay with him, they will not win again. He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our country, ‘Trump said of the Senate’s GOP leader in a new statement released by his Save America political committee on Tuesday.
“Where necessary and appropriate, I will support primary opponents who are making America America Great Again and our policy of America First,” he continued. “We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful and compassionate leadership.”
Trump’s deluge of insults against McConnell comes days after the Kentucky senator voted to acquit the former president of ‘incitement to insurrection’, only to annoy him a few minutes later on the Senate floor as ‘morally responsible’ for the deadly U.S. Capitol riot and repeat view in a Wall Street Journal on Monday.
“The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Senator Mitch McConnell at the helm,” Trump said, blaming McConnell for the Republicans losing control of the Senate. “McConnell’s commitment to normal affairs, the status quo policy, coupled with his lack of political insight, wisdom, skill and personality, quickly drove him from majority leader to minority leader, and it will only get worse.”
Trump concluded his statement by calling it a ‘great moment for our country’ and saying: ‘we can not let this go by using’ third leaders’ to dictate our future! “
Trump and McConnell are increasingly shaking their heads as a divided Republican Party wants to draw the best path to regain control in the Senate and beyond.
“As far as the war between Trump and McConnell is concerned, they have two different goals – Trump wants to rehabilitate himself so that he can serve as president again in 2024 and Mitch McConnell wants to win back the Senate in 2022,” said GOP strategy Patrick Griffin. and added: “If Trump chooses to further divide the Republican Party by fielding primary candidates against sitting senators, then he will ensure one thing – that the Democrats will control the Senate and that they increase their majority.”
