When will this Carson Wentz trade finally take place?
The Inquirer reported on Friday an agreement was ‘close’.
ESPN reported on Saturday that the Eagles are expected to trade with Carson Wentz in the coming days.
On Monday, NJ.com author and BGN alumnus Mike Kaye cited a source who expects the deal to take place today or tomorrow.
Maybe that will still be the case. But … maybe not?
Mike Garafolo was kind of everywhere in the news during a Monday afternoon NFL Network:
‘I think a lot of people thought’ OK, Super Bowl is over and in the morning this trade will be over. ‘I made a call to everyone involved with this one and said that nothing was at hand. That the Eagles are basically waiting for an offer that they think is worth exchanging for Carson Wentz. And one of the options still on the table – I don’t think it’s likely – is that they do not get an offer they deem worthy and say, “OK, Carson Wentz, sign up for training camp.” I believe in the end he is going to be traded and they will get an offer that will make them separate with Wentz. I still can’t see a way for him to get back to the Eagles. I said on WIP radio in Philly last week I was 50-50, but when I was with them I said I’m officially at 51-49, he’s going to trade and I do not think I’m coming back to 50- 50 not. So I’m almost 100% sure he’s going to trade eventually. But it may not be as fast as people here think. The Bears and the Colts are among the teams involved. I’m told there are more teams involved, and I’ll also tell you that the Bears and Colts have other quarterbacks watching them. So a lot of moving parts, a lot of chess, a lot of poker is played. I can not really put you here on a time frame. I think he is being traded, I can not tell you how fast, but it can be relatively fast. ”
A few thoughts on this:
- We keep hearing that the agreement is ‘close’ and yet nothing is ‘at hand’. OK. Useful.
- That a report like this leaks out tells me that the Eagles are not very happy with the offers they have received so far. I can not buy the Eagles to just bring Wentz back for 2021. And neither do the teams Wentz offers, which are not as profitable as the Eagles prefer to do.
- “More involved teams” feel like an attempt to make Wentz’s active competitive look more than it really is. Tony Pauline again said the interest of the San Francisco 49ers in Wentz could not be diminished. So, maybe there really are some other teams out there.
- There is danger of holding out the best possible deal. That does not mean that Howie Roseman should jump to everything that is currently on the table. But Roseman runs the risk of overplaying his hand here, the longer this saga lasts.
- This morning at 09:32 in the East, Windon City Gridiron Brandon Robinson said he expected Wentz news “within 24 hours. He also added:
Fans will be very upset about the compensation if / when he lands in Chicago
– Brandon Robinson (@BRobNFL) 8 February 2021
I believe he is referring to Bears supporters being upset about the compensation. If that’s true, it’s a good sign for Eagles fans.
- Lots of rumors out there. TBD when we will finally get clarity.
