Tourists are missing on a trip to the infamous Dyatlov Pass

A group of tourists disappeared more than six decades ago in the Russian mountains near the infamous place where nine students died under mysterious circumstances.

The eight hikers from Moscow never returned on Wednesday after heading to Dyatlov Pass in the Ural region, Newsweek reported, citing Russian media.

‘They would leave at 08:00 this morning. But they are not back yet and there is no contact with them, ‘a local resident told local E1 media.

The tourist traveled to the area to pay tribute to the victims who died there in February 1959, the resident said.

Russia blamed the mysterious deaths of the nine students on an avalanche and poor visibility.

But their gruesome injuries, which include skull fractures and broken ribs, have spurred conspiracy theories ranging from an animal assault to an attack by strangers.

In 2019, Russia will reopen the investigation in an effort to quell the speculation.

Andrey Kuryakov, deputy chief of the regional prosecutor, said the latest investigation confirmed that the group was hit by an avalanche and then froze to death.
