Tottenham Player Ratings: Gareth Bale and Son save the day as Ryan Mason starts with victory

Hugo Lloris

Made an early double save, squeezed Salisu’s header and then flew superbly over his goal to stop Adams’ hard follow-up. Came down to deny Walker-Peters in the twelve minutes. Could not get close to Ings’ header from eight meters. 7

Serge Aurier

Ings hit the ball for the goal of the Saints striker on the half-hour mark. Improved in the second half with his defensive efforts if he did not contribute much going forward. 6

Toby Alderweireld

A solid enough presence at the back and handled a lot of what came his way. 7

Eric Dier

In the first half there were some good blocks, and besides that one moment in the first half was over, and both centers benefited from Ings’ departure. 7

Sergio Reguilon

Came down on many occasions on the left and it was his perfect low ball that Son fired just for trying to get out. Worked hard throughout and Son let the penalty win for the winner. 7

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

He was constantly trying to mobilize the troops. Made some important interceptions, including one that was late to stop a break from the saints in extra time. 7

Tanguy Ndombele

A very quiet match of the Frenchman and he struggled to make a big impact before being replaced by Winks. 5

Giovani Lo Celso

Curled an early attempt wide from the left. A few sloppy games improved, but the second half went on and passed a fine ball to Reguilon for Son’s non-goal. Shortly afterwards replaced by Lamela. 5

Gareth bale

Trying to make things happen with some nice touches in and around the box, but often others were not on its wavelength. Cut inside and fired a shot at the goalkeeper early in the second half. He fared one better with a fine curl finish on the hour mark after Lucas’ shot veered off his path. 7

Lucas Moura

Try to get the ball going, but give it too much away. Was unlucky to be involved on the sidelines due to Son’s ruled out effort, as McCarthy did not save Son’s shot, regardless of the Brazilian’s position. Many efforts, but so little quality. 5

Seun Heung-min

I thought he let Spurs take place in the second half with a quick finish, just for Lucas to eclipse the goalkeeper from an offside position. He still scored his goal with a compound penalty goal two minutes ahead. Not his best performance in the long run, but he did the thing when it mattered. 6

Subs

Harry Winks

Arrived and gave some impetus to midfield in the second half. 6

Erik Lamela

Lo Celso replaced and Spurs tried to chase in the last ten minutes. 5

Steven Bergwijn

Bale late replaced. Nvt
