Total War: Warhammer 3 unveils, and Cathay confirms, in an extremely metal trailer

Yes, it was Total War: Warhammer III. Last night we reported on how Creative Assembly teased something with a series of shorts. It seemed a bit like just going over a new DLC, and further digging through the community pointed to clues that something bigger was coming. Fortunately, we do not have to wait long to find out what.

We know it’s been going on for a while now, but Creative Assembly has done it now formally announced the third entry for their popular strategy game series in the iconic Warhammer Fantasy universe.

Confirmed races for the new match have so far been among fan favorites Kislev, the four factions of Chaos (Khorne, Tzeentch, Slaanesh and Nurgle) and in a surprising move, Cathay. We are confident that there will be more to come, but Cathay is definitely an interesting choice. Essentially Warhammer Fantasy’s version of China, little attention was paid to them in the old table series, which means CA has the opportunity to fill in the blanks. If only the studio had experience with making strategy games in China …

Institutions referred to in the announcement material include ‘Realms of Chaos’ and the ‘mysterious lands of the East’. We think that Kislev will also be nice in the snow. But enough about that, what you really want to see is this extremely metallic trailer:

The plot summary for the new game reads: “If you start a new great campaign, you will save or exploit the power of a dying god.” Although much has been speculated, it may be referring to the infamous ‘End Times’ event that ushered in the formal closing of the Warhammer Fantasy series (to be replaced by Age of Sigmar), Creative Assembly said that is not what is happening not, apparently:

“Total War: Warhammer III is about the government of Karl Franz. Our primary source is Warhammer Fantasy Battles 8th Edition, although we have and will use older editions for inspiration. ”

Either way, Warhammer III seems to be setting up a collision of epic proportions, and we can not wait to find out more. Meanwhile, our editor Richard spent way too much time analyzing the trailer above.

Total War: Warhammer III will appear on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store sometime in 2021, and is now available to pre-order. While you wait, Total Warhammer 2 enjoys a 15% discount on Fanatical.
