KENT COUNTY, MI – According to the National Weather Service, a brief tornado damaged a handful of homes and vehicles in southern Kent County on Saturday.
The “very small, short and weak” EF-0 tornado started on Saturday 10 April at 16:18 and ended a minute later according to a public information statement from the National Weather Service.
The spinner hit the Preservation Lakes subdivision east of Byron Center and south of Cutlerville in Gaines township and traveled about half a mile, the statement said.
Estimated peak speeds of 70 to 80 km / h were reached in the tornado with a road width of 65 meters, the statement said. The wind damaged six to twelve houses, especially tearing a small section of the roof.
An EF-0 tornado is classified according to wind speeds between 65 and 85 miles per hour on the improved Fujita scale.
Additional damage included the cut-off of two houses and a partially depressed garage door. Security camera / video of the doorbell revealed that objects were being carried in the air as a result of the tornado.
According to the statement, the wind also lifted debris, including a few grass chairs, which hit two vehicles.
No injuries were reported by the National Weather Service.
