In this week’s top stories: One UI 3.0 loses the option to hide the camera notch, the January 2021 security update is available for Google Pixel phones, a probable successor to Nest Hub goes through the FCC, and more.
Before the launch of the Galaxy S21, the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update came to quite a few Samsung phones. Unfortunately, phone owners are discovering that one popular feature, the ability to disable part of the screen to hide the front of the camera, is missing in One UI 3.0.
This begs the question: is Samsung going to launch an impressive camera technology in the not too distant future? Well, given the Galaxy S21 versions that have already leaked a prominent display card, we will not be deploying for a while yet.
Google on Monday unveiled their first Android software update of the year, bringing their Pixel phones to the January 2021 security level. The biggest changes were for the latest generation of Pixel phones, which solves problems with the volume of the system and the brightness of the car.
All other phones (Pixel 3 / XL, 3a / XL, 4 / XL, 4a, 4a 5G and 5) get the following enhancements:
- Solution to a problem that causes some programs to restart from time to time
- Further improvements for auto-rotation response in certain device directions
- Solution to the problem prevents calls from appearing on certain MVNO networks
This week, a new Google device was passed by the FCC, which put it one step closer to release. From the submission, we were able to determine that this is most likely a smart Nest Hub-style display with built-in Soli radar technology. Meanwhile, our sources have told us that this new Nest Hub Soli will be able to be used to track your sleeping habits.
As for the launch, the new Nest Hub comes with Soli this year. We’re told it will come sooner, which is consistent with the FCC’s confidentiality over the submission (and related images) ending in July. Meanwhile, the company announced to us on Tuesday that it plans to release a new range of Nest security cameras in 2021.
Elsewhere in Made by Google News, the company has confirmed that the clear white color of Pixel 4a 5G will be available at more retailers soon. Up to this point, the Clearly White Pixel 4a 5G was only available via Verizon, which means it was only available on the $ 599 model with support for mmWave 5G.
Holiday and barter buyers may feel a little overwhelmed that Google has introduced a new color after the gift season, but it will only get closer to February. This is because Google is aggressively encouraging people to get the Pixel 4a 5G.
Another week, another streaming service. This week, Discovery + became the latest network-specific streaming service offering content such as The Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network and more.
If Discovery + is a great addition to your library, the platform is available everywhere on Google platforms. You can download Discovery + on Android TV and the new Chromecast with Google TV. The service also works via a native app on Android as well as on the Internet on Chromebooks. Discovery + also works with Chromecast devices and TVs with built-in Chromecast.
