Top 10 Classic Movies to Watch on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve will definitely look different this year, but you can still say goodbye to 2020 in style.

You already have the hottest ticket in town (homely home) and you can easily kick back in a glamorous get-up (or pajamas), very bubbly and a perfectly composed playlist. Along with some popcorn, you can end the year by watching some classic movies featuring some of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars.

To help us with our selection, Fox News contacted film expert and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) presenter Alicia Malone, who shared some of her own personal favorites to stream or rent before the ball falls. And best of all, you can be lazy in 2021 while running the movie marathon.

ANNA MAG WONG, SEEN IN NETFLIX’S ‘HOLLYWOOD’, FINALLY CLOSES A RIGHT, says TCM HOST ALICIA MALONE

“The apartment” (1960)

“This is the movie I watch every New Year’s Eve, but I recommend it to people all year round because it’s my favorite movie of all time,” Malone said. “Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine play in this romantic comedy / drama by Billy Wilder, who was a master at mixing tones. It’s romantic, but not saccharine, dramatic but not disturbing, and contains a bonus hint of how to make spaghetti with a tennis racket. “

“An American in Paris” (1951)

If you need inspiration for your own glamorous evening at home, then the glamorous musical “An American in Paris” from 1951 under the direction of Vincente Minnelli is a suitable choice for New Year’s Eve. The film, starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, tells the story of three friends who struggle to find work in Paris. However, things only get more complicated when two of them fall head over heels for the same woman. Look out for the party scene on New Year’s Eve, which will inspire anyone to freshen up a bottle of champagne (or two) before the clock strikes 12.

“Joan Leslie plays noir in this intriguing film, with a story that begins on New Year’s Eve,” Malone said. “The key question the film poses is, ‘If you had the chance to relive the last year, what else would you do?’ And while I’m sure many of us do not want to go through 2020 again, the idea is whether you can change fate, or that events are destined to happen, no matter what is fascinating. ‘

For those looking for a good murder mystery to solve, “After the Thin Man” from 1931 starring William Powell and Myrna Loy is worth watching while curled up on the couch. The iconic couple on screen work together for the sixth time to solve the case of a missing person who gets too close for convenience. Look out for James Stewart, as well as Penny Singleton, who played ‘Blondie’ in the film franchise and later voiced Jane Jetson in the ’60s animated series’ The Jetsons’.

“If you need a good old cathartic cry to shed this year’s grip, ‘An Affair to Remember’ will do it,” Malone warned. “Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr fall in love on a transatlantic voyage, sharing a kiss on New Year’s Eve and deciding to break off their engagement and meet again in six months. It’s a remake of ‘Love Affair’ from 1939, and one of the most romantic movies of all time. “

“On the other hand, if you need more of a romantic distraction from the sadness of 2020, the New Year’s kiss between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan will have a happier outcome,” Malone said. “It’s an important rom-com that asks if men and women can really just be friends, and a great way of Meg Ryan in the late ’80s. I’ll have what she has.”

“Since 2020 felt like one giant disaster movie, why can you not fight the year with a real disaster?” suggested Malone. “Gene Hackman and Shelley Winters are two of the passengers aboard the SS Poseidon, which is ready for a dazzling New Year’s Eve party … until a tsunami strikes.” Suppose here is one star who played a character who went to a watery tomb for the third time.
