Tom Holland’s appeal to everyone is pretty unmistakable; that’s a big part of what made the British actor such a compelling turn on Marvel’s unhappiest hero, Peter Parker. We can now add another data point to ‘He’s just like ordinary people!’ credentials: The revelation that he found out he was cast in the same way as the rest of us as Spider-Man: by reading a blog post on Marvel.com.

It comes from a recent interview Holland did this with his fellow MCU alumnus Daniel Kaluuya (currently starring in the upcoming Judas And The Black Messiah) as part of Variety‘s series on actors about actors. Amidst his golf game and Kaluuya’s film viewing habits, Holland revealed the unlikely way he found out he got the role for which he auditioned for the past year of his life, i.e. Marvel sees it on Instagram. and then click through to a blog with its face on it.

Given what a life-changing role it was, it’s hard to blame Holland for what he did next: turn his computer off his bed, scare his dog and then ran down to tell his family – also his brother, who baptized the whole thing so unlikely that he assumed it was part of the then-unbridled Sony hacking scandal. But no: Marvel really told the whole world previously they told Holland, presumably because you can only get Mark Ruffalo’d about this great movie secrets so many times.

You can look at the rest of the interview, in which Holland and Kaluuya also reflect Cherry, Fred Hampton, Ryan Coogler, and more, over at Variety.
