Orlando, Florida – Sen. Tom Cotton said on Friday that former President Donald Trump has a “big role” in the future of the Republican Party and warned that President Biden is trying to “unravel” Trump’s achievements.
Cotton did not say in an interview with Fox News whether he intends to elect him president in 2024, as many have speculated. He said he was rather aiming to oppose Biden’s actions as president and to try to help Congress go from red to blue in 2022.
“I will focus on stopping Joe Biden’s agenda and winning back the House and Senate for the time being,” Cotton said.

Cotton acknowledged that Trump will continue to play an important role in the GOP, saying one of his biggest contributions so far has been to move the GOP to more of a populist party.
“One thing President Trump has done over the past five years is to restore the views of many Republican politicians and help them understand the views of Republican voters,” Cotton said. “For most Americans, certainly most Republicans, it’s just common sense that America should come first and that American workers should come first.”
He added: “He has helped restore the Republican agenda. We put Americans first now. We stand against China. We stand up for our trade interests to ensure we do not just give away our prosperity. And Joe “Biden is trying to unravel it all. President Trump does not want it. I do not want it. And also no Republican who wants leadership in the party.”

Cotton, when asked about his place in the party, said “my immediate role is to stop Joe Biden’s open borders, big government, big taxes, big spending agenda.”
But, Cotton added, the GOP has a serious opportunity to become more than a minority opposition party in the coming intervening periods.

“We come from the Trump presidency much stronger than from one of the Bush presidencies,” Cotton said. We have an equally divided senate and we have the largest minority in the House of Representatives we have had in 80 years. So we have a lot of leverage to stop Joe Biden’s agenda. And I think if we stop it and expose ourselves, it’s going to get unpopular … It’s going to help us win back the House and Senate next year. ‘
