Toddler shot in the head in possible road rage in Chicago

Police shot a toddler in the head during an apparent incident on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.

The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. Tuesday after an incident “shot for about two blocks,” police commander Jake Alderden said at a news conference.

The 21-month-old sustained a bullet wound to his head and was in critical care at Lurie Children’s Hospital.

“We are doing everything we can for this little boy and thank everyone for their concern,” said Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, medical chief of the hospital and medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The car the boy was in later crashed and a Good Samaritan stopped to help, Alderden said. According to police, the driver took the boy and a female passenger to a hospital.

Police said a person is being questioned but no arrests have been announced.

Alderden said it is not clear what caused the incident.

“At the moment, it seems like they were completely unknown to each other, and there was a dispute over someone, you know, and not letting anyone into a lane,” he told a news conference.

Alderden said a gun was found with the child of someone in the car, but police did not know if it was fired and are investigating.

Family members said the toddler’s condition has improved, but he is still not out of the woods, reports NBC Chicago.
