It is understood that the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise will take place during World War II, and the game is tentatively titled “WWII: Vanguard. “According to sources for Modern Warzone, the game will also have an impact on Call of Duty: War zone, and weapons and assets shared with the title will look similar to Black Ops Cold War. Last month, Modern Warzone reported that Call of Duty 2021 is in development from Sledgehammer Games, which fits, as the developer previously worked. Call of Duty: WO II. Clearly the team has some experience with the institution!
Modern Warzone seems confident in acquiring it, but the article reporting these details also mentions that previous rumors pointed to a 1950s environment for the next Call of Duty. Since World War II ended in 1945, it would not make much sense! Modern Warzone speculates this WO II: Vanguard can be set in an alternative timeline where the war dragged on longer. According to this author it is also possible Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard can be a game that deals specifically with events directly after the war, such as rogue Axis powers. Unfortunately, these are just suspicions at the moment!
Interestingly, WWII: Vanguard is not the only new Call of Duty game that may be in development. A prominent Call of Duty leak also hinted that a standalone game called Call of Duty: Zombies is in the works from Activision. Further details are currently very sparse, including which team can develop the match. If that’s right, Call of Duty fans may have a lot more content to enjoy in the future!
For now, readers are advised to take these reports with a grain of salt until Activision makes an official announcement. Sources sometimes get information wrong, and plans can often change during development. Black Ops Cold War just released a few short months ago, so it’s probably a little longer before the publisher announces something concrete about his next Call of Duty game.
